While I'm not even going to try to explain everything that is wrong in this article, Biography of the Buddha - a review of the new book by Karen Armstrong, I do enjoy one analogy.

She compares the Bible to the TV program ER, and the Buddhist sutras to Martha Stewart Living! What a hoot! I like that, actually - the Bible is filled with action, passion, love, hate, war, sex, and more - lots of it too wild for prime time. The Buddhist sutras are more like a serene instruction on creating a peaceful life. While we love the action that gets the adrenaline flowing and the blood pumping, at some point, hopefully, we get tired of that and want to breathe quietly.

I'm going to assume the writer of the article has only read the basics like the Dhammapada - since the enormous scope of the Buddhist sutras also includes wonderful stories of the full aspects of life. There are also many wonderful legends of the Buddha's life that have carried over into other cultures - someday soon, I'll be including some of those stories on Luminous
